Ailsa Wong’s Mixed Media Art in Motion

Why We Recommend it

Ailsa Wong’s first solo show, 1, invites visitors into a dimly-lit chamber to resemble an ant nest. Inspired by ants, the artist explores how all sentient beings are interconnected and work together as part of a larger entity.

Description

Ailsa Wong’s first solo exhibition, 1, explores the idea that all sentient beings are connected as part of a larger whole, inspired by how an ant colony works together as one. The show invites visitors to think about how humans, animals and machines might be linked in a shared system. Resembling the dark, intricate inside of an ant nest, the exhibition space emphasises this sense of interconnection and collective life.

Key works include “Antigora,” a 2D visual novel game co-composed by AI and the artist, where players follow a story about a fictional ant religion and take on different roles to experience a shared consciousness. The sculpture series, “Still,” features ant hill-shaped forms with moving clock hands, symbolising the endless flow of time from an animal’s perspective. By removing the clock dials, Wong questions how humans measure time and suggests that our sensory experiences are the true way to experience the present.

Born in 1997 in Guangdong, Wong is a Hong Kong-based multidisciplinary artist working across painting, video, games and installations. She graduated with a bachelor of fine arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2019. Her works explore themes such as consciousness, primitive emotions and fragmented narratives, responding to feelings of disconnection in today’s world.
