The 14th Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival features 54 local and overseas films, which will be screened at Broadway Cinematheque, MOViE MOViE Cityplaza and PREMIERE ELEMENTS.
Founded and led by veteran Hong Kong film director Johnnie To, the Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival aims to promote and encourage local short film production, and to discover and nurture young talents by providing funding, training, and a platform for showcasing their work.
Consisting of two sections, Local Competition and International Selection, the festival collaborates with overseas film festivals and organisations in screening outstanding short films from around the world.
This year’s festival features 11 competing short films from Hong Kong, with candidates having to go through two rounds of rigorous selection. Despite coming across difficulties due to the recent social unrest and coronavirus pandemic, the filmmakers managed to pull through and finish their films.
Besides shorts from Hong Kong filmmakers, the festival will also showcase the works of Japanese director Tetsuya Mariko, emerging directors Lin Ya-yu from Taiwan and Leong Siew-hong from Malaysia, and more.
