Turbulent Times Across the Globe: The year 1968 on Screen
Why We Recommend it
Curated by six local film critics, this programme will screen six works that are either produced around or reflect on 1968, a turbulent year.
Critics’ Choice 2018 – 1968: A Year of Cinematic Significance draws together films from around the world centred on the year 1969, a period marked by strikes, protests, and clashes with authority.
Among the works that will be screened are the Japanese New Wave film Diary of a Shinjuku Thief (1969), which centers around a young book thief and a store clerk who become lovers and partners in crime, and the Brazilian Cinema Novo film Antonio das Mortes (1969), a depiction of social protest and an uninhibited blend of genres.
