Why We Recommend it
The 50th edition of the Hong Kong International Film Festival brings together acclaimed filmmakers, new discoveries and Siu Hak’s imaginative key visual.
Description
Marking its 50th anniversary, the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) launches a landmark Golden Jubilee edition that honours half a century of cinematic excellence while looking boldly to the future. This April, the festival brings together many internationally renowned filmmakers. They will participate in masterclasses and face-to-face sessions to share their passion for cinema with local audiences.
For example, Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche will present her two latest films in Hong Kong: In-I In Motion, a dance-theatre collaboration with Akram Khan, and Queen at Sea, a Berlinale prizewinner exploring memory and family. There will also be a special retrospective called Juliette Binoche: The Choreographer of Emotion that showcases three films that won her Best Actress awards in Three Colours: Blue, The English Patient, and Certified Copy. Elsewhere, Hungarian auteur Ildikó Enyedi returns with her latest film, Silent Friend, starring iconic actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai, an introspective tale of humanity’s bond with nature.
Complementing the lineup are diverse works, such as long-time festival friend Tsai Ming-Liang’s Back Home, offering a meditative portrait of rural Laos as he accompanies his muse, the Laos actor Anong Houngheuangsy, on a homecoming journey, and regular festival attendee Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s Morte Cucina, a chilling thriller that reveals his distinctive visual style.
Reflecting the 50th anniversary milestone, the festival’s new key visual by local illustrator and comic artist Siu Hak embodies the theme 50 and Beyond: Framing the Future. Brimming with fantastical symbols and Hong Kong imagery like flying saucers and neon-lit cinemas, the artwork pays tribute to the city’s creative spirit while framing HKIFF’s continuing journey into new realms of imagination.
The films will screen at key venues such as the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre, M+ Cinema and Louis Koo Cinema.
