A Grass Roof: Lily Stockman’s Portals of Colour

Why We Recommend it

Taking inspiration from the Tang Dynasty poem “Songs of the Grass Roof Hermitage,” Lily Stockman plays with frames, shapes and colours to explore perceptions of space and depth on canvas and in our lives.

Description

California-based painter Lily Stockman is hosting her first exhibition in Hong Kong at MASSIMODECARLO, Tai Kwun. A Grass Roof takes inspiration from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) poem “Songs of the Grass Roof Hermitage” written by Buddhist master Shitou Xiqian, specifically the line “though the hut is small, it includes the entire world” (庵雖小,含法界). Playing with frames within frames, the paintings’ vividly coloured shapes and detailed textures possess expansive depths that draw the viewer in, like a portal that includes the entire world on the other side.

Stockman frequently converses with other art forms through her works, with exhibitions in recent years exploring Virginia Woolf’s The Waves, Homer’s Odyssey and Le Corbusier’s Maison La Roche. Her works are exhibited in prominent museums and art institutions around the world.
