A 19th Century Romcom? Opera Hong Kong Do Donizetti

Why We Recommend it

A relatable romance, moral message and hummable score mark out this Italian masterpiece as an ideal opera for first-timers and agnostics alike.

Description

For its summer show, the ever-reliable Opera Hong Kong turns its talents to Gaetano Donizetti, presenting the Italian composer’s best-loved work. The 19th-century equivalent of a romantic comedy, The Elixir of Love is described as an ideal gateway opera for newbies, with a mix of love, laughs and easy-to-digest melodies.

The production marks the company’s third collaboration with acclaimed director Tang Xinxin, who notably worked local Cantonese influences into last year’s production of Franz Lehár’s enduring operetta The Merry Widow.

Rather than hiding in the pit, conductor Olsi Qinami and the Opera Hong Kong Orchestra perform live on the stage for this semi-staged production, which is also expected to highlight some of tomorrow’s stage stars, with many of the young cast alumni of the Opera Hong Kong Young Artists Programme.
