A Talk With Pulitzer Prize Winner Tyehimba Jess at Tai Kwun

Why We Recommend it

American Poet Tyehimba Jess, 2017 Pulitzer Prize winner for Poetry, will exchange and discuss ideas with Hong Kong poet Tammy Ho in a public talk.

Description

Tyehimba Jess (b. 1965, Detroit) comes to Hong Kong to discuss his critically acclaimed, second book Olio (2016) with Hong Kong literature buffs. Olio weaves sonnet, song, and narrative to examine the lives of mostly unrecorded African American performers directly before and after the Civil War up to the First World War I. Jess’ collection of poems is an effort to understand how these performers met, resisted, complicated and co-opted.

The talk will be hosted and moderated by poet Tammy Ho, the founding co-editor of Hong Kong-based literary journal Cha and an assistant professor at Hong Kong Baptist University.

The event starts at 18:00 and will last approximately one and a half hours. Admission is free – interested parties are asked to RSVP here.
