Discover What’s Unique About Cha Chaan Teng

Why We Recommend it
Airside’s GATE33 decodes the hidden design language of Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng through immersive, research-driven installations.
Description
Airside GATE33 Gallery’s The Cha Chaan Teng CODEX: Tales of Invisible Designs reframes Hong Kong’s iconic diners as complex cultural and design systems. Led by architectural historian and architect Charles Lai and community interaction planner Kay Chan Wan-ki, the research-based exhibition brings together cross-disciplinary creators to unpack how cha chaan tengs shape — and reflect — the city’s visual identity, craftsmanship and everyday life.
Across seven zones, the exhibition maps the cha chaan teng as a complete cultural system—beginning with “What is the Cha Chaan Teng”, where the preserved Sun Fung Kee neon sign (preserved by local conservation group @streetsignHK) anchors a display of archival artefacts, licensing documents, and early visual identity. Visitors then move through spatial design and community life, and into the pantry and tableware that define its everyday operations. The science section turns to eggs as a core ingredient, showing how slight variations shape classic dishes, while a sensory installation recreates the aromas of cha chaan teng cuisine. From here, the narrative expands into modern interpretations by chefs and designers, its enduring presence in Hong Kong cinema and speculative new imaginations of the typology.
Two interactive highlights punctuate the journey: decoding ordering shorthand via a “phone order” game and stepping into a life-size beverage station to assemble a signature “super-express meal,” while donning a server’s uniform.
Free admission during Art March. Paid entry from 1 April onwards, with free entry for children under 3.
