Weaving Shadows and Light: Alice Ma Dances at CHAT

Why We Recommend it

As part of a special event, contemporary dance artist Alice Ma will perform at CHAT, dialoguing with Gulnur Kukazhanova’s felt paintings through dance improvisation.

Description

CHAT will host a special evening event on 22 January (from 19:30 to 21:00) in conversation with Kazahk artist Gulnur Mukazhanova’s solo exhibition Dowry of the Soul. Titled Weaving Shadows and Light, curator Wang Weiwei will first lead a tour of the exhibition, after which contemporary dance artist Alice Ma will perform at the gallery, dialoguing with 84 felt paintings through her dance improvisation — bringing a less common perspective and viewing experience.

The evening will conclude with a sharing by Wang Weiwei and Alice Ma while two complimentary drinks are provided. The sharing will be conducted in English and Mandarin with informal Cantonese interpretation. A felt souvenir will also be given to participants.

Ma has been actively involved in many projects, including choreographing and performing Over-master, a 2019 production commissioned and produced by the Hong Kong Arts Festival. In 2020, she received the Tom Brown Emerging Choreographer honour at the 22nd Hong Kong Dance Awards. A year later, in 2021, Ma received the honour of Award for Young Artist at the 15th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards.

On 30 January, further complementing Mukazhanova’s solo exhibition, an immersive dance performance, tour and conversation called Ode to Central Asia will take place at CHAT from 19:30 to 21:00.
