Description

Alisan Fine Arts’ Chinyee: Six Decades of Abstract Expressionism is the gallery’s sixth solo exhibition for the late Chinese-American artist and her first posthumous solo show in Hong Kong since her passing in 2023. The exhibition spans 60 years of Chinyee’s career — featuring oil paintings, watercolours and collages created between 1955 and 2018 — many exhibited in Hong Kong for the first time. From lyrical brushwork to expressive bursts of colour, these works trace her evolving dialogue between traditional Chinese calligraphy and Western abstraction.

Born in Nanjing in 1929, Chinyee studied fine arts in New York after receiving a scholarship in 1947. Initially rooted in realism, she turned to abstraction in the 1950s under the influence of the New York School. Her later works, inspired by the rhythm and movement of Peking Opera, reveal bold, gestural energy — a fusion of Eastern spirit and modernist freedom that shaped a distinctly personal visual language.
