The Ink Art of Fang Zhaoling

Why We Recommend it

Alisan Fine Arts marks its 45th anniversary with a solo exhibition of Fang Zhaoling, showcasing her dynamic ink practice shaped by tradition and modernity.

Description

As part of its 45th anniversary highlighting the theme “Then and Now,” Alisan Fine Arts displays its second solo exhibition of Fang Zhaoling (1914–2006), highlighting works from the 1960s to 1990s that reflect her distinctive, expressive ink language. Spanning landscapes, figures, bird-and-flower paintings and calligraphy, the exhibition reveals how Fang transformed traditional subjects into reflections of lived experience, memory and a forward-looking spirit rooted in twentieth-century China.

A student of distinguished artists Zhang Daqian and Zhao Shao-ang, Fang developed a bold, freehand style that bridges literati ink traditions with a vigour akin to abstract expressionism. Her works have been exhibited internationally in major institutions and collections such as the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco; London’s British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of Art; underscoring her significance as a leading female artist in modern Chinese art.
