Brushes of Chinese Ink Art Through Past and Present

Description

Exploring the development of Chinese ink painting, the Tradition Transformed exhibition demonstrates how artists have both challenged and preserved the philosophical aesthetic foundations of the artistic medium. The selected works are organised in three main themes including Form, Narrative and Materiality. 

In Form, artists like Irene Chou (late student of Lui Shou-kwan, Hong Kong’s pioneer in the New Ink Movement) blend Abstract Expressionism with Chinese principles, while Chiang Yomei’s abstracts reflect the impermanence of reality. Meanwhile, Narrative features Walasse Ting’s vibrant depictions and Xu Lei’s Renaissance-inspired storytelling amongst others. Lastly, Materiality showcases different works like Wang Tiande’s incense-burned landscapes and Fu Xiaotong’s needle-perforated Xuan paper works, demonstrating innovative uses of traditional materials. This exhibition offers a rich tapestry of artistic innovation and cultural heritage.
