Chapters: Anoushka Shankar Meets CCOHK

Why We Recommend it

Crossover sitar star Anoushka Shankar presents Chapters, a bold orchestral collaboration which premiered at London’s BBC Proms.

Description

As the daughter of India’s best-known musician — the sitarist Ravi Shankar who famously once schooled The Beatles in art of the raga — Anoushka Shankar would always face an uphill battle to carve her own artistic path. Miraculously, she hasn’t just earned the respect of traditionalists — but maintained it long since crossing over with a series of fascinating fusion albums, mixing in musical elements of everything from electronic beats to flamenco and jazz.

That journey of sonic reinvention began with 2005’s Rise, but reached a new peak with a recent run of three ambient-leaning, numbered Chapter EPs, released 2023-25 and featuring contributions from diverse talents including Arooj Aftab, Sarathy Korwar and Nils Frahm. In the latest twist, these spacious, meditative releases have been rearranged for performance alongside a chamber orchestra, in a programme debuted at the BBC Proms under the baton of Richard Ames. The conductor will travel to Hong Kong to present the Chapters suite, with Shankar backed by our very own City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, the homegrown ensemble which co-commissioned the piece.

The performance begins at 20:00.
