Slick NYC Modern Jazz from Drumming Genius Ari Hoenig

Drummer bandleaders are a relative rarity in the jazz world, which means any sticksman who does put themselves forward for top-name billing, is generally a cut above. That charge can certainly be levelled at Ari Hoenig, a New York City scene stalwart who has somehow found time to over a dozen solo albums during a prolific three-decade career, which is perhaps most notable for his long association with trumpet legend Kenny Wheeler.

To Hong Kong’s rapidly expanding jazz scene he brings a new trio, backed by longstanding double bassist bud Ben Tiberio and saxophonist Tivon Pennicott — whose credits include recording on Grammy-winning records for Esperanza Spalding and two with Gregory Porter.

There’s no record of this trio working together yet released, but on the basis of standout streaming standout Punk Bop Live at Smalls, Hoenig’s “melodic drumming” gift shines especially brightly on stage — so we’re looking forward to some slick, fiery modern jazz from a trio of players with serious chops.
