Description
Shaped by temperature, sound and atmospheric conditions, Los Angeles-based artist Aryo Toh Djojo’s groundbreaking new series of thermochromic paintings is showcased in his latest exhibition, Spectra, at Perrotin. These canvases reveal UFO-like and meditative forms across two galleries, where fluid conditions determine the visibility of the imagery.
Highlights include Seven Angels and High Life, innovative thermochromic paintings that reveal UFO-like forms as heat activates their surfaces. These works are accompanied by a layered soundscape of looping drones and melodies, inspired by Aryo’s workshop with prominent musician Brian Eno. Meanwhile, Hand of God features highly realistic, surreal airbrush paintings on large canvases, blending mysticism, sci-fi and spirituality with mostly representational imagery and some light leak-inspired abstractions. Together, these pieces create an immersive sensory experience where science, art and urban storytelling intertwine, inviting reflection on truth and consciousness.
Having studied at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design, Djojo employs a masterful airbrushing technique combined with principles of visual perspective and colour theory to craft dynamic works that blur photographic realism with surreal, sci-fi elements. His paintings weave familiar cityscapes with enigmatic, otherworldly motifs, inviting viewers to question perception and memory.
