Wesley Tongson’s Meditative Ink Landscapes Dance Between Self and Spirituality

Why We Recommend it
The first comprehensive exhibition in over a decade, Asia Society’s Singing and Dancing with Brush and Ink retrospective revisits Wesley Tongson’s experimental ink through spirituality, identity and Hong Kong’s modern ink history.
Description
Singing and Dancing with Brush and Ink revisits experimental ink painter Wesley Tongson (Tang Jiawei, 1957–2012) through both art history and lived experience. A homecoming following a series of well-received presentations abroad, it also marks the final installment of Asia Society Hong Kong Center’s two-part Celebration of Ink, honouring the legacy of ink art. Spanning early experiments in Toronto during the 1980s to the late Spiritual Mountains series, the show traces how Tongson fused literati traditions with radical material play.
Organised across five thematic sections, it foregrounds not only his technical innovations — brushless painting, splashed ink and “Tongson colours” — but also the spiritual and psychological dimensions underpinning them. Painting emerges as a meditative, embodied act shaped by Buddhist, Daoist and Christian thought, as well as by his struggles with mental health and gender identity. Situating Tongson within a lineage bridging modern and contemporary ink, the exhibition underscores Hong Kong’s role as a critical site for rethinking ink beyond tradition.
Assembled from loans by M+, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, the University Museum and Art Gallery at the University of Hong Kong, as well as private collections and the Wesley Tongson Charitable Trust, the exhibition is co-curated by Yi Yi Mon (Rosaline) Kyo and Julia M. White, with support from the Asia Society Hong Kong Center Gallery and Exhibitions team.
On 16 July, 18:30–20:00, join co‑curators Kyo and White, alongside Cynthia Tongson — the late artist’s sister and director of the Wesley Tongson Charitable Trust — for an engaging talk that delves deeper into Tongson’s painting practice and expands on the themes explored in the exhibition. Reception starts at 18:15.
