Bel Canto Singers Presents Esther: An Original Musical

Why We Recommend it
Homegrown vocal ensemble Bel Canto Singers presents the original musical Esther, which tells the classic biblical story of Queen Esther saving her nation.
Description
Bel Canto Singers presents its original musical, Esther, with music and lyrics by the homegrown ensemble’s artistic director, David Quah.
The story of Queen Esther is one of the Bible’s most dramatic–an evil advisor to an unpredictable king leading to near disastrous consequences, only to be saved by a new young queen based on her wit and faith. In Bel Canto’s current musical setting, the story takes on a new light, making it relevant again to the audience of today, bringing forth the positive message that even in dire situations, hope and determination can turn the tide around.
In the title role of Esther is soprano Athene Mok, who received glowing reviews for her debut performance as “Ghost” in Chan Hing-yan’s chamber opera Ghost Love in September 2019 as part of Taipei Hong Kong Week 2019. Starring opposite Athene is tenor Henry Ngan, a current member of Opera Hong Kong’s Young Artist Programme, as King Xerxes. Fellow Young Artist Programme member soprano Candice Chung is Queen Vashti, whose banishment by King Xerxes is the key to the eventual saving of the Jewish clan.
Performed in English with Chinese subtitles, Esther promises a musical filled with humorous dialogue, songs and dances, accompanied by jazz band Mo-Men-T under the baton of conductor Kelvin Ngai.
