Beyond the Senses: Chinese Music Like You’ve Never Experienced It Before

Why We Recommend it

Chinese music is coupled with poetry, songs, music, dance and various visual elements in this highly sensory performance by Wuji Ensemble.

Description

Beyond the Senses is an ‘atmospheric musical theatre show’ in which renowned Kunju—one of the oldest extant forms of Chinese opera—artist Kong Aiping re-interprets classical Chinese poetry.

The show is set in a serene garden, in which its protagonist Ru Yu wanders around, reciting and singing about the scenery that surrounds her. As she does so, she realises that what she sees and hears are but illusory and unreal, and slowly attains enlightenment and transcendence in life.

Founded in 2003, the Wuji (Chinese for “boundless”, “endless” and “continuously evolving”) Ensemble consists of a group of local musicians. The Ensemble commissions both new works and arrangements of existing repertoires in Chinese and Western music, sometimes complemented with other theatrical elements.
