Bingyi: Taihang Rhapsody

Why We Recommend it
Contemporary ink artist Bingyi reimagines art, history and politics through a woman’s lens in Taihang Rhapsody.
Description
In her latest solo exhibition, contemporary ink artist Bingyi unfolds a grand, speculative narrative of art’s relationship to history and politics through the imagined legacy of Hua, a fictional Northern Song matriarch of painting. By blending historical clues with artistic vision, the artist reexamines cultural heritage from a woman’s perspective, revealing an alternative lineage within Chinese art history.
Co-curated by INKstudio director Craig Yee and Asia Society Hong Kong Center head of gallery and exhibitions Chris Wan, Taihang Rhapsody is displayed across the five chambers of the Chantal Miller Gallery — mirroring the architectural rhythm of Hua’s imagined mountain temple. Authorship fluidly shifts between Bing and her fictional persona Hua, questioning the boundaries between history and invention, material and spiritual experience.
Known for her monumental ink paintings and site-specific environmental works, Bing received a doctorate from Yale University in 2005 and has exhibited internationally at major institutions such as the National Art Museum of China, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago. She continues to challenge conventions of ink art, authorship and femininity in contemporary practice.
