Exhibition: Reimagining Birdwood Block in History

Why We Recommend it
Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre’s Incising the Matrix: If Birdwood Block exhibition showcases artist Jay Lau’s prints and installations, reimagining a parallel reality where Birdwood Block still exists.
Description
Organised and held at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre (vA!), Incising the Matrix: If Birdwood Block presents artist Jay Lau Ka-chun’s creations on exploring the forgotten past of this historic building.
During his six-month residency at vA!, Lau drew inspiration from the history of Victoria Barracks, which comprised the former married officers’ quarters, Cassels Block, a Grade I historic building housing vA! and its adjacent ‘twin’ building Birdwood Block, now converted as a children’s playground.
Using historical archives and images, Lau employed image-editing software and AI technology to create a series of prints and installations reimagining a parallel reality where Birdwood Block still exists. Displayed throughout vA!, highlights of Lau’s creations include the print series “Fictional Scenery” and “Reversed Scenery,” as well as the installation “Non-existent Rubble,” which fabricates a fragment resembling rubble from Birdwood Block.
