Weaving New Perspectives on Borders at Blindspot Gallery

Why We Recommend it

This tactile group show collects works by artists across different geographies and material practices to examine how borders are stretched, untethered and reimagined.

Description

Blindspot Gallery’s Soft Borders explores the shifting boundaries between the social, cultural, historical and geographical. The group show features six artists spanning Asia, Africa and the United States, which are: South African artist Igshaan Adams, Chinese artist Bi Rongrong, Japanese-born American artist Kazuko Miyamoto, Hong Kong artist Angela Su, Japanese artist Aiko Tezuka and Malaysian artist Yee I-Lann.

Each artist takes a different approach, using techniques such as weaving, embroidery and interlacing, along with a range of materials, to reflect on their personal experiences and understanding of borders.

For example, Igshaan Adams’s “Nama stap (ii)” (2026) comprises a tapestry and suspended sculpture drawing on the artist’s Nama heritage on his maternal side. Meanwhile, Angela Su’s “The Fabric of Time” (2026) features a programmed real-time clock, a calendar of 31 hair-embroidered hands and a single hair embroidery depicting the hand gesture for “null,” to highlight human labour and automation.

The opening reception will be held on 12 September from 15:00, with an English-language guided tour starting at 16:00.

The exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday and is available by appointment only.
