Description
Isaac Chong Wai is having a hometown moment. While mounting a crossover spectacle at Tai Kwun – with his first solo live art exhibition, Intimate Surrender – the Berlin-based, Hong Kong-raised artist’s monumental Venice Biennale performance is simultaneously being celebrated across town. Performance footage of “Falling Reversely,” as performed as part of Adriano Pedrosa’s main exhibition in 2024, forms the centrepiece of Blindspot Gallery’s summer screening schedule. Drawing its choreography of CCTV footage of racial assaults committed against Asian individuals in public spaces, the live/video work sees performers of Asian descent repeatedly falling in synchronization, gathering around those who have fallen in gestures of protection and support.
Recent video works by Sin Wai Kin, Wang Tuo and Zhang Xu Zhan will also be screened as part of Play and Loop VII, the gallery’s seventh annual programme, exploring docufiction, stop motion animation and performance. Commissioned for the 14th Shanghai Biennial, Wang’s “A New World” collects the societal reflections of six festival ambassadors: film scholar Dai Jinhua, curator Fei Dawei, artist Wang Jianwei, artist Zhang Peili, philosopher Zhang Nian and writer and journalist Zhou Yijun. Elsewhere in Wai King, Sin emulates personas posing as canonical art historical paintings to thought-provoking effect, while Zhang animates papier-mâché into fantastical stop-motion worlds populated by instrument-playing animals and mythical creatures.
Private viewing by invitation and appointment only.
