Hex State Server: Brandon Tay on Fate and Computation

Why We Recommend it

An interactive system merging I Ching logic and simulation, Hex State Server probes the tension between chance, computation and destiny.

Description

Hex State Server is Brandon Tay’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, centred on an interactive oracle that merges Chinese divination with computational logic. Anchored by a sculpture, real-time simulation and display, the work operates as a server generating 64 discrete states inspired by the I Ching (an ancient Chinese divination text). Visitors activate the work collectively, generating microfictions about technological, ecological and existential states. Surrounding the exhibition, “Phantom Index” traces a speculative trajectory of Chinese thought, extending from historical frameworks into imagined futures. Together, these elements position fate not as fixed, but as something continuously processed and reconfigured.

Singapore-born and Shanghai-based, Tay works across sculpture, installation and moving image to examine how myth and technology intersect. Drawing on scientific revelation, occult traditions and computational logic, his practice constructs environments where meaning is recursive, unstable and continually rewritten. He has exhibited at different platforms including the Singapore Biennale, transmediale in Berlin and the National Communication Museum in Melbourne, among others.

The exhibition is open Thursday to Saturday, from 12:00 to 18:00, or by appointment via email.
