Why We Recommend it

As part of the Cantonese Opera Young Talent Showcase programme, the Cantonese Opera Appreciation Series at Yau Ma Tei theatre examines the traditional art from a modern perspective through the eyes of local literary scholars, poets, actors and singers.

Description

The programme at Yau Ma Tei theatre features three Cantonese opera classics: The Legend of the Purple Hairpin, which tells of the intricate love affair between the scholar Yik and the courtesan Siu-yuk (Pak Suet-sin), initiated by his returning of her hairpin; Princess Chang Ping, a fictional tale about the arranged marriage between the Ming Dynasty princess and her husband/lover Zhou Shixian; as well as The Eight Joys at the Flowery Field, the romantic comedy about the friendship between a monk and a warlord.

Excerpts from the three classics will be performed by renowned Cantonese opera actors and actresses such as Kwan Wai Sham Juliana (瓊花女). Additionally, scholars, singers, artists and poets will introduce the historical backgrounds, decode the meanings and examine the social issues embedded in these productions.
