CATS to Pounce on Hong Kong: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s timeless musical on stage

Why We Recommend it

Following two seasons in London’s West End, the acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s much-loved musical CATS comes to Hong Kong.

Description

Based on T. S. Eliot’s 1939 collection of poems, Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the musical CATS is one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. It is renowned for its musical score composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and its energetic choreography that fuses feline movement and almost-human characteristics with contemporary dance moves.

Since its world premiere in 1981, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries and translated into 15 languages. This production is a revival set up by the original creative team and stars an acclaimed international cast.

Its story is set on one special moonlit night, when the Jellicle Cats reunite in a rubbish dump for the yearly Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories, praising the unique abilities and special traits that make them an exceptional tribe. Their wise and benevolent leader, Old Deuteronomy, must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

Grizabella, a one-time glamour cat who left the tribe years ago to explore the outside world now wants to return to the fold. But she is shunned by the rest of the tribe and can only look back on her past as she sings the poignant song ‘Memory’.
