CCDC’s Like Summer Flowers: Vital, Vulnerable Homegrown Talent

Why We Recommend it
City Contemporary Dance Company’s new Laap3 Laap3 Ling3 series hands the reins over to the company’s dancers to create from the soul.
Description
Ten pieces, 13 artists, two programmes, and just four performances — these numbers distill the raw ambition propelling the creation of City Contemporary Dance Company’s newest works. Laap3 Laap3 Ling3 (熠熠炅) is a forward-thinking performance series that hands the reins over to the company’s own artists, to conceive, create and choreograph personal works. Its conception is a response to a growing wellspring of local talent — towards “an era surging with such passionate vitality … [and] a fearless younger generation.”
The series’ first chapter Like Summer Flowers presents 10 brand new pieces presented over two independent programmes, each performed twice. In each piece a CCDC performer has choreographed their peers in creating raw, fresh works that prioritise self-expression, in short pieces that range from intimate solos to groups of up to six.
“With each turning season, the stage transforms anew,” says the show’s producer, CCDC artistic director Sang Jijia. “’Laap3 Laap3 Ling3 was conceived not merely as a platform for expression, but as a laboratory for the future of contemporary dance in Hong Kong. These ten works represent CCDC dancers at their most vulnerable and vital — breaking through the soil after a long period of quiet incubation. Just as the summer sun bakes the earth, the stage lights will illuminate their raw artistry. We invite the public to witness this collective awakening.”
