Space Fantasy: CCOHK Launch a Galactic Musical Adventure

City Chamber Orchestra Hong Kong’s (CCOHK) make a bold step into the stage world with this family theatre spectacle. Space Fantasy is an outer-space musical spectacular that follows Fluto, an alien who intercepts NASA’s Voyager 1, discovers the Voyager Golden Record and travels to Earth in search of Bach. He meets Astrid, a young musician preparing a Bach partita for her school competition, and together they embark on a fantastical spaceship journey to Europa, Jupiter’s fourth-largest moon, to perform in the Stars of the Cosmos show. The production blends live orchestral, theremin and electronic music with theatre, song, dance, digital art and circus acts.

Created and directed by award-winning playwright and CCOHK artistic director Leanne Nicholls, the score is by composer Luna Pan and theremin virtuoso Miles Brown. The international cast features 10-year-old Hong Kong harpist-singer-actor Adeline Wong as lead role Astrid, world-acclaimed recorder virtuoso and physical comedian Gabor Vosteen as Fluto, and a stellar ensemble of singers, dancers musicians and circus artists from Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and Germany.

Three performances will take place: on 29 August, 15:00 and 19:30, and on 30
August, 15:00. Lasting 80 minutes with a 15-minute intermission, the show is performed in English and suitable for ages 3 and above.

Then, on 31 August, between 19:00 and 21:00, Miles Brown, a leading performer of the theremin, will give a demonstration on how this intriguing, electronic instrument works and how to compose pieces from it. Pre-registration required.
