Nouvelle Vague: Chantal Stoman’s Retrospective Photo Exhibition

Why We Recommend it
Discover Chantal Stoman’s Nouvelle Vague retrospective exhibition at La Galerie Paris 1839, blending fashion, urban stories and memories through her signature cinematic photography.
Description
La Galerie Paris 1839 presents Nouvelle Vague, a retrospective exhibition of Chantal Stoman’s photographic series including Nouvelle Vague, Visiting Paris, Tokyo Trip, and more. The exhibition pays tribute to the late 1950s French New Wave film movement, which rejected traditional filmmaking to explore narrative and existential themes in a documentary style. Stoman integrates accessories like shoes, bags and hats to set scenes that transcend fashion, as supporting elements to paint character-driven narratives. Her cinematographic images emphasise relationships between characters, their environments and reflections of themselves – inviting viewers to engage actively with the unfolding narratives.
Invited by Alliance Française Hong Kong, Stoman will present her films Omecitta and L.A L.A END on 26 May and 4 June. Meanwhile, she will also have a one-month residency in Hong Kong as a filmmaker, working on Le Cantique de l’Oiseau, a documentary film focussed on birds in the city.
Chantal Stoman is a Paris-based French photographer and filmmaker who began her career in fashion photography before shifting to art-related projects in 2005. Her recent works focus on human connections and cultural nuances, with cities and memory as key themes intertwining both the past and present.
Extended until July 26, 2025.
