The Golden Age of Hong Kong’s Cotton Industry, Remembered

Why We Recommend it

Discover Hong Kong’s textile legacy through archival imagery, vintage cotton artefacts and hands-on spinning experiences inside a former factory space.

Description

Set within the former Nan Fung cotton-spinning factory, CHAT’s permanent exhibition Welcome to the Spinning Factory! revisits Hong Kong’s textile industry through material memory and spatial residue. The preserved green walls and high windows of The D. H. Chen Foundation Gallery frame a narrative of archival photographs, vintage cotton products and industrial artefacts, forming a concise yet layered account of a defining manufacturing era.

Visitors experiment with traditional spinning tools and design their own cotton labels, reconnecting with processes once central to local production. Conceived by the CHAT collection and exhibition team, with design by Assemble and graphics by HATO, the project balances research, interpretation and interaction. Textile history emerges not as distant heritage, but as a tactile, lived experience embedded in Hong Kong’s urban transformation.
