Cheung Chau Bun Festival 2026

Why We Recommend it
This May, Cheung Chau Bun Festival returns with bun scrambling, Piu Sik parade and Taoist rituals rooted in a century of tradition.
Description
The Cheung Chau Bun Festival is one of Hong Kong’s most distinctive cultural celebrations, rooted in a century-old Taoist ritual to dispel plague and honour the deity Pak Tai. Also known as the Jiao Festival, it originated in the late Qing dynasty and continues as a community-led expression of gratitude, peace and protection. Key highlights include the Piu Sik parade on 24 May, where children dressed as deities appear to float above the crowds, and the Bun Scrambling Final at midnight on 25 May, a lively competition staged on towering bun-covered structures. Lion dances, sacrificial rites and papier-mâché effigies further animate the island.
Recognised on China’s national list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the festival blends history, folklore and local craftsmanship, drawing visitors each spring to experience one of Hong Kong’s most enduring traditions.
