HKDI Exhibition Explores the Past and Present of Chinese Wedding Costumes

Why We Recommend it

The Hong Kong Design Institute’s new exhibition, Kwan Kwa: Chinese Wedding Costume Reimagined, celebrates the iconic traditional Chinese wedding costume through historic and innovative works.

Description

Themed on Hong Kong’s bridal culture, the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) presents a new exhibition, Kwan Kwa: Chinese Wedding Costume Reimagined, celebrating kwan kwa craftsmanship across generations.

Spanning six dedicated zones, the exhibition features a curated selection of artefacts, historical pieces and contemporary reinterpretations, offering a comprehensive experience of this living tradition, from intricate embroidery and symbolic dragon and phoenix motifs to traditional wedding blessings.

One highlight is the HKDI Fashion Archive’s prized collection of traditional kwan kwa, categorised into five classic tiers: King of Kwan Kwa, Queen of Kwan Kwa, Big Five Fortune, Middle Five Fortune and Small Five Fortune. It traces how this centuries-old costume evolved from everyday attire for the gentry and officials into ceremonial bridal wear with rare artefacts.

Alongside the historical narrative, the exhibition also invites five renowned fashion alumni to create original kwan kwa pieces that reinterpret its timeless elegance for a modern audience, complemented by innovative works from a recent kwan kwa masterclass, where HKDI students used artificial intelligence to generate traditionally inspired patterns.

The exhibition is open Monday to Friday, from 14:00 to 17:00, and is closed on weekends.
