Description
Each year on Chung Yeung Festival, many Hongkongers customarily hike and visit the cemeteries to clean the graves of their ancestors. The festival falls on 29 October this year.
The festival’s name refers to its date and the yin-yang numerology. Chung (重 cung4) roughly means repeated, while yeung is the transliteration of the Cantonese pronunciation of 陽 (joeng4). Since nine is the largest yang-number, and the festival is observed on the ninth day of the ninth Chinese lunar month, there is a doubling of yang and is thus known as the Double Ninth Festival.
It is also observed by different parts of Asia like mainland China, Macau, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, with variations in the date of the festival and in the customs practiced.
