Cloud Gate’s Lunar Halo Returns to Hong Kong

Description

Presented by WestK Performing Arts, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre returns to Hong Kong with Lunar Halo after a seven-year hiatus. It is a visually arresting contemporary dance work by artistic director Cheng Tsung-lung. Inspired by the rare lunar halo phenomenon, the piece transforms celestial imagery into a poetic exploration of human instinct, technology and change. Fourteen dancers move with raw, elemental force, shifting between solos, duets and charged ensemble scenes that evoke both ritual and rebirth.

The production features an original score by Icelandic band Sigur Rós, blending atmospheric post-rock with experimental and classical textures. Visual design by Jam Wu and Ethan Wang integrates monumental LED screens and mirrored staging, expanding the dancers’ bodies into surreal landscapes. Since its 2019 premiere, Lunar Halo has gained international acclaim for its cinematic intensity and striking interplay between physicality and digital imagery, offering audiences an immersive and thought-provoking experience.
