Community Ceramics and Urban Change in Tai Kok Tsui

Why We Recommend it

Ceramic works crafted with recycled materials from Tai Kok Tsui draw attention to how urban change shapes community identity. Local stories and textures are captured in glazes made from coffee grounds, metal scraps, and paper ash, highlighting everyday objects and overlooked materials.

Description

Through the Good Glaze, Tai Kok Tsui project — part of the RE: Tai Kok Tsui public and community art initiative — artisans and community members collaborated to develop ceramics that reflect the neighbourhood’s evolving landscape. Organised by the Hong Kong Arts Centre, the exhibition features pieces created with glazes derived from local waste, offering new ways to experience Tai Kok Tsui’s unique colours, histories, and cultural character.

Formerly a district defined by metalworking and traditional crafts, Tai Kok Tsui now combines historic landmarks with recent residential and commercial changes. The project’s approach — transforming discarded materials into functional art — bridges the area’s heritage and its ongoing renewal.
