Contemporary Dance Dog Rising: A “Lustful, Hypnotic Ritual”

Why We Recommend it

The pulsating bodies of Montreal-based contemporary dance choreographer Clara Furey’s Dog Rising appear locked in a rhythmic sensual frenzy, but never even touch.

Description

Erotically charged language introduces Clara Furey’s dynamic dance piece Dog Rising. WestK’s own promotional blurb promises “a polyphony of pulsating bodies” performing a “lustful and hypnotic ritual,” while collectively the performers “erect an architecture of pleasure.”

But the easily embarrassed have nothing to fear. Throughout the whole piece, the trio of dancers don’t event touch. Conceived by the Québécois choreographer at the outset of the pandemic, Furey became fascinated with how humans share emotions and inspire physical arousal without physical contact. Since its premiere in 2021, reviewers have described the sensual ripples made by the bodies in perpetual motion, pulsing rhythmically to the loud crashes of frequent collaboration Twin Rising’s wild and unpredictable score. We have hosts at French May for bringing such challenging contemporary dance to Hong Kong.

The performance takes place at 20:00 on 26–27 June, and 15:00 on 28 June.
