Description
Co-organised by the Art Museum, Shanghai Museum and the Department of Fine Arts at CUHK, the Transcending Transience: Art and Culture of Late Ming Jiangnan exhibition features 193 exhibits – including paintings, calligraphy works and antiquities from prominent collections. It also marks the inaugural exhibition of the Harold and Christina Lee Gallery and the largest exhibition ever held by the Art Museum.
Jiangnan province was a hub for literati and scholars who cultivated an elegant lifestyle amidst political instability in the 16th and 17th centuries. During this period, the literati were eager to break free from ancient traditions and to give expression to their individuality through a range of mediums and styles like brush and ink, and exquisite wares. The exhibition includes masterpieces from eminent collections such as the Shanghai Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst, Berlin.
