Qianlong Emperor: Art and Empire from the Huaihaitang Collection

Why We Recommend it

CUHK Art Museum’s The Qianlong Emperor reconstructs Qing court art through the Huaihaitang Collection and rare imperial workshop archives.

Description

From June to October, CUHK Art Museum’s The Qianlong Emperor: A Legacy in Art, The Huaihaitang Collection examines the material and intellectual world of 18th-century Qing court art. Featuring over 150 works — including porcelain, jade, lacquer, textiles and painting — the exhibition draws on the Huaihaitang Collection owned by prominent entrepreneur and collector Anthony Cheung Kee-wee, with nearly half of the objects donated to support research and teaching. Anchored by the Archives of the Imperial Workshops, it reconstructs the systems behind production to imperial standards, foregrounding craftsmanship, regulation and imperial taste.

On 4 July 2026, a public programme extends these themes through a lecture, lunch, and guided viewing. Professor Gao Zhenyu, a leading zisha artist trained under Gu Jingzhou, reflects on Yixing pottery and tea culture, while curator Tong Yu offers an exhibition walkthrough grounded in imperial workshop history and collecting practices. Registration begins at 10:15, followed by the lecture from 10:30 to 12:00. After a one-hour lunch break from 12:00 to 13:00, a guided tour will take place from 13:00 to 14:00. Pre-registration is required.
