Félix González-Torres’ Inaugural Show in Hong Kong

Why We Recommend it
Late visual artist Félix González-Torres’ first Hong Kong solo show, Somewhere better than this place / Nowhere better than this place, explores dualities through city-wide installations and gallery works.
Description
Somewhere better than this place / Nowhere better than this place is late visual artist Félix González-Torres’ inaugural solo exhibition in Hong Kong, weaving his exploration of dualities — belonging and estrangement, private and public, fixed and fleeting — into the city’s layered history and shifting identity. The show also extends beyond the gallery walls, activating public spaces with installations of his signature candy and paper stack works, inviting engagement and reflection on the boundaries of intimacy, anonymity and access in urban life.
Highlights include “Untitled (Welcome Back Heroes)” (1991), a candy installation that dissolves as visitors partake, symbolising renewal and loss amid Hong Kong’s dynamic daily rhythm. Simultaneous public and gallery displays of the double paper stack “Untitled” (1989/1990), featuring the phrases “Somewhere better than this place.” and “Nowhere better than this place.,” confront viewers with senses of hope and endurance.
González-Torres (1957–1996) redefined conceptual art through his minimalist yet deeply emotional use of everyday materials, creating powerful statements on identity, love, loss, activism and human connection during the AIDS crisis. Living and working in New York City from 1979 to 1995, his work resonated globally with poetic and political depth. His art has been exhibited at major institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea in Santiago de Compostela, Spain.
