Classic Vocal Jazz: Dee Dee Bridgewater and Helen Sung

Description

For three years, the Jazz in the Neighbourhood series brought top names to Tsuen Wan Town Hall. While that venue partnership recently reached a conclusion, the swing evidently isn’t going anywhere — as this A-list appearance makes loudly clear. In international circles, Dee Dee Bridgewater rose to prominence back in 1974 following her Tony-winning breakout role in the original Broadway musical The Wiz. She later garnered more praise starring in the role in Billie Holiday stage tribute Lady Day.

Following the commercial success of her mid-career heyday, recent decades have seen the 75-year-old roll back the pop and R&B influences to re-embrace her jazz roots — earning two Grammys along the way for recorded tributes to Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Hope to hear tunes from both in this hotly touted duo tour, which will see the legend’s striking voice accompanied only by pianist Helen Sung, a star in her own right who notably toured with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.

The performance begins at 20:00.
