Why We Recommend it
The Reflection of Soul is a contemplative photography exhibition by Yang Yankang on Tibetan faith, daily life and spiritual practice.
Description
Marking the first anniversary of photography bookstore Devedo, The Reflection of Soul in the culmination of photographer Yang Yankang’s long-term engagement with Tibet, focusing on faith as it unfolds in everyday life. Rather than monumental landscapes or spectacle, the exhibition foregrounds intimate, often understated moments — monks and laypeople at prayer and play — revealing a lived spirituality that is both grounded and poetic. These images soften the perceived distance of Tibetan Buddhism, offering a contemplative visual language where the sacred emerges through daily gestures and encounters.
Born in 1954, Yang is known for his sustained exploration of religious life across China. Since the 1990s, he has spent three decades photographing Catholic, Tibetan Buddhist and Muslim communities, completing his “Faith Trilogy” as a long-term commitment. His lens avoids exoticism, focusing instead on the everyday lives of believers through close, sustained immersion. Between 2003 and 2013, he travelled extensively across Tibetan regions, living among local communities and documenting their daily rhythms with quiet attentiveness. For Yang, photography gradually becomes a form of devotion — an embodied process of seeing, understanding and belief.
