The Dhrupad Experience: Ragas, Meditation and Vocal Workshop

Why We Recommend it

With a dearth of Indian classical music in the city, The Dhrupad Experience is a rare opportunity to experience the spiritual potency of ragas.

Description

The oldest known form of vocal music in the Indian classical lineage, The Dhrupad Experience is directly descended from Vedic chants, rooted in deeply spiritual poetry delivered in virtuosic exaltations. In the present day, Niloy Ahsan is recognised among the style’s most foremost practitioners — a student of legends Wasifuddin Dagar and the Gundecha Brothers, who is famed for a five-octave vocal range. He performs in Hong Kong alongside Mexico-raised percussionist Jorge Ramiro, a disciple of influential tabla maestro Pandit Samir Chatterjee who has studied Indian percussion since the age of 12, and performed on three continents.

Before the concert, an independently ticketed one-hour workshop will offer the curious an opportunity to try singing Indian ragas, learn about Dhrupad and enjoy moments of meditation, with tea and refreshments served before the two-hour performance.

On 30 May, the workshop will be held from one hour from 17:15, before the concert begins at 19:15.
