Doris Chui’s Surreal Urban Reflections

Why We Recommend it

Held at SC Gallery, local artist Doris Chui Suet-wai’s first solo exhibition uses neon colours and surreal visuals to reveal the mental fatigue and relentless pace of modern city life.

Description

Doris Chui Suet-wai’s debut solo show at SC Gallery, We Float, As We Slowly Fall Asleep, explores the contradictory mindset of urban dwellers caught between mental exhaustion and the relentless chase for speed. Drawing from her own mental state, Chui employs a striking neon palette and surreal juxtapositions in her paintings — like figures lying on beds and wilting flowers radiating faint light — to depict the overstimulation and sensory fatigue beneath the dazzling city lights and the pressures of modern society.

Chui’s artistic style features neon-like hues and dreamlike scenes that blur reality and imagination. She amplifies body parts and everyday objects, using strong contrasts of light and shadow to convey the emotional overload of modern individuals. Over-relying on external stimuli to boost efficiency and chase goals, people often experience a muffled perception, yet remain unwilling to fall behind.
