Dragon Boat Festival: Races, Drums and Delicious Zung

Why We Recommend it

Celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival with delicious rice dumplings and exciting dragon boat races across Hong Kong.

Description

Also known as the Tuen Ng Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival will be celebrated as a public holiday on 31 May. In keeping with tradition, many venues will host races to mark the occasion. Races are held throughout the city in Stanley, Tai Po, Sha Tin, Aberdeen, Sai Kung, Tuen Mun, Cheung Chau, Tai O and Tap Mun. Times, distances, and the number of teams may vary for each event.

Dragon boats, maintaining their traditional decorations, are manned by rowers and drummers as they navigate the designated course. Visitors are invited to cheer on the paddlers as they race their colourful boats to the beat of traditional drums.

Bakeries and restaurants also sell zung2 (粽), sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves and filled with sweet or savoury ingredients, for people to enjoy.
