Edinburgh Fringe Comes to HK With Award-Winning Plays

Why We Recommend it

The Insider and Songs of Lear from Edinburgh Fringe are performing in December 2025 and February 2026 respectively, bringing their exciting experimental approaches to theatre to Hong Kong.

Description

European Theatres in Resonance, hosted by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is introducing two award-winning plays from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to Hong Kong. At the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Danish production The Insider by Teater Katapult will put on four performances from 19 to 21 December 2025. Songs of Lear by Song of the Goat Theatre from Poland will deliver three shows from 6 to 8 February 2026, which will be performed at the Hong Kong City Hall.

Inspired by the Cum-Ex scandal, The Insider tells the story of an international case of tax fraud from the perspective of a young tax lawyer turned whistleblower. Throughout the performance, the audience will be provided with stereo headphones, immersing in amplified, cinematic sound. On stage, actor Christoffer Hvidberg Rønje delivers his whole performance of the lawyer inside a glass cubicle, accompanied by video projections. Audience will be able to meet the artists after the 19 December 20:00 and 20 December 15:00 sessions.

Songs of Lear offers an experimental adaptation of King Lear, condensing the Shakespearean play into selected scenes and expanding them through 12 original compositions, delivered in a variety of musical styles. The play combines folk instruments, powerful vocals and raw choreography to give an intense retelling of the story — distilling its emotional and spiritual essence into a cathartic experience. Meet-the-artist sessions will be available after the performances on 6 and 7 February. At Sheung Wan Civic Centre, director Grzegorz Bral and performer Alicja Bral will lead a theatre workshop on 4 and 8 February, tickets sold separately.
