Eileen Chang’s Legacy at The Repulse Bay

Why We Recommend it

The Repulse Bay presents an evocative exhibition marking the 30th anniversary of Eileen Chang’s passing, tracing her profound connection to Hong Kong and her literary legacy.

Description

To mark the 30th anniversary of Eileen Chang’s passing, Eileen Chang’s The Repulse Bay: Love, Upheaval and the Beauty of Fragility is an immersive exhibition celebrating the legendary author’s enduring bond with Hong Kong.

Explore the storied history of the original Repulse Bay Hotel — once a glamorous haven for celebrities and socialites like writer Ernest Hemingway — through rare artefacts such as a 1926 hotel menu and instruments played at the hotel, evocative photographs that capture the hotel’s timeless allure. Replicas of Chang’s manuscripts and letters, on loan from Hong Kong Metropolitan University, offer glimpses into how her experiences amid wartime transformation shaped modern Chinese literature.

The exhibition also offers docent-led tours in Cantonese (13:30 and 17:30), Mandarin (14:30 and 16:30), and English (15:30) on weekends and public holidays.
