Emily Kueis Reveals Layers of Identity

Why We Recommend it

Skin in Limbo at Square Street Gallery marks the gallery’s debut solo exhibition of Emily Kueis, featuring large-scale oil paintings and recent works that examine identity and the unseen.

Description

Emily Kueis makes a solo debut at Square Street Gallery with Skin in Limbo, centring on three new large-scale oil paintings shown alongside recent works on canvas and paper. Together, these pieces form a metaphysical landscape shaped by a pictorial language that unfolds like a personal diary, reflecting the evolving sense of self and identity as a painter in Hong Kong.

The artistic practice of Emily Kueis fluidly merges abstraction and figuration. Distorted, floating figures appear suspended in cosmic-like spaces, their partial bodies contorted in ways that probe the tension between physical and psychological boundaries. Flesh becomes a vessel for lived experience and memory.

Recurring motifs — mannequins, scarecrows and raven silhouettes — are subtly transformed into psychological markers, prompting viewers to reconsider what is often overlooked in daily life. This approach resonates with Martin Heidegger’s idea that everyday existence is frequently forgotten until disrupted. Through these allegorical disruptions, Emily Kueis gently unsettles the familiar, revealing layers of meaning within the mundane.

Skin in Limbo invites viewers to engage with the unseen dimensions of experience, offering a poetic reflection on identity, perception, and the boundaries that shape us.
