Concert: Esa-Pekka Salonen Conducts Sibelius No. 5 with HKPhil

Why We Recommend it
Esa-Pekka Salonen leads HK Phil in Strauss, Sibelius and his Horn Concerto, with principal horn of the Berlin Philharmonic Stefan Dohr in its Asia premiere.
Description
Conductor and composer Esa-Pekka Salonen leads the Hong Kong Philharmonic (HKPhil) in a programme that places the horn in the spotlight, spanning Richard Strauss’ Don Juan, Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 5 and his own Horn Concerto.
From the heroism of Strauss to the lyrical sweep of Sibelius — whose final movement features a horn theme inspired by sixteen swans in flight — the works highlight the instrument’s expressive range. At its centre is the Asia premiere of Salonen’s Horn Concerto, performed by Berlin Philharmonic principal horn Stefan Dohr, bringing both technical brilliance and tonal depth to the stage.
Salonen is widely regarded for his clarity, precision and forward-looking programming. A former music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony, he has shaped contemporary orchestral music through both performance and composition. Here, he leads HKPhil in a programme that bridges canonical repertoire with his own distinctly modern voice.
There are two concerts: 1 May at 19:30 and 2 May at 17:00. Each performance runs approximately 1 hour 45 minutes with an intermission.
