Words and Encounters at European Literature Night

Why We Recommend it
Join a unique literary walking tour through Central and Sheung Wan featuring prominent local personalities reading excerpts from contemporary European writers across multiple venues.
Description
Each year, European Literature Night transforms ordinary venues into literary destinations. For 2025, with events running from 17:30 to 22:30 on 17 September, audiences can map their own route through Central and Sheung Wan, joining readings by well-known Hong Kong personalities from works by thirteen European authors, staged at multiple venues in 30-minute intervals. The programme celebrates the breadth of contemporary European literature, in many languages and across genres.
Supporting this constellation are local partners, who help root the project within Hong Kong’s own cultural fabric; media partner Zolima CityMag and co-organisers, Bookazine, Hong Kong International Literary Festival, and the 11 venues across Central and Sheung Wan.
Organised by Czech Centres, Consulate General of the Czech Republic and EUNIC Cluster Hong Kong — comprising Goethe-Institut, Alliance Française, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, and with the support of the European Union Office to Hong Kong and Macao alongside the Consulates of Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, and the Ukrainian Society. This event transforms bookshops, galleries and cultural spaces into intimate reading venues. Audiences become active participants, curating their literary journey through the city’s cultural quarter.
