Existential Drama by Jon Fosse at Hong Kong Arts Centre

Why We Recommend it
The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre stages a play by Jon Fosse, Sleep, offering a profound exploration of human relationships and existence, showcasing the intricate bonds and solitude that define human life.
Description
Sleep, directed by Yau Ting-fai, is a work by 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate Jon Fosse. The play follows couples of different ages as they inhabit a new house, seemingly unaware of each other yet connected by an unseen thread. The narrative juxtaposes past, present and future, creating a rhythm akin to hesitancy in pillow talk. As the past and future confront each other, “he” arrives, adding another layer to the complex web of relationships.
Fosse’s innovative style, characterised by minimalism and emotional depth, has made him one of the most performed playwrights globally. His works often explore existential themes, giving voice to the unsayable through simple yet powerful language. Sleep invites audiences to reflect on the quiet moments that define human connection, using imagination as a tool to appreciate the world of Jon Fosse.
Performances will take place at the Shouson Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Centre, from 15 to 30 March 2025.
