Fantasies in Reality: Indulging in Classic Hong Kong Films

Description

Hong Kong Film Archive is celebrating the rich legacy of Hong Kong fantasy cinema, presenting 12 classics from 1959 to 2005. The lineup includes genre-defining icons like Mr. Vampire and Saviour of the Soul, as well as genre-bending cult films like I Love Maria directed by Tsui Hark. Notably, the programme begins with the world premiere of the 4K restoration of Hong Kong New Wave Classic The Spooky Bunch, a horror comedy playing with supernatural folklore in a Cantonese opera troupe setting. Fans of warmer fantasy films are also treated with Lavender, a tenderly stunning romance featuring Takeshi Kaneshiro.

Most screenings feature pre- or post-screening talks by critics, scholars, directors or industry professionals. Not all films will be accompanied by Chinese and English subtitles. The Spooky Bunch will be screened at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the rest of the programme at Hong Kong Film Archive.
